Gokyo Lake Trekking Itinerary

  • Day 1 Arrival at Kathmandu Airport and transfer to hotel. Overnight at hotel.

A representative from our company will receive you once you arrive in Tribhuwan International Airport in Kathmandu and takes you to your pre-arranged place of accommodation.

    • Day 2 Fly to Lukla (2,804 mt.), trek to Phakding (2,610 mt.). Walking 3 hours. Overnight at guest house.

This early-morning flight to Lukla lasts for around half an hour. The views outside the window sufficiently capture the attention of all on board – cameras, mobiles, photographs. Our walk to Phakding starts after breakfast in Lukla. Mostly on a flat trail all the way, it’s the Sherpa settlements, the huge prayer stones, monasteries and the distant mountains that seem to attract everyone’s attention on this first walk. Phakding is where we stop for the night today.

      • Day 3 Phakding to Namche Bazar (3,441 mt.). Walking 6 hours. Overnight at guest house.

Along the banks of the Dudhkoshi River and over a number of suspension bridges, the route enters and leaves Monjo Village on the way and heads for Jorsalle, where we stop for lunch. After lunch in this only settlement until Namche Bazaar, we move on. The pine forest, perhaps, is the only relief in those final two hours of the steep demanding climb just before the arrival of Namche. This headquarters of the Khumbu Region is where we stop for the night.

        • Day 4 Rest day at Namche Bazar for acclimatization & exploration. Overnight at guest house.

The day today is for acclimatization. Once in higher altitudes, it is important that we allow the body the opportunity to adapt since the amount of oxygen in the air now becomes less and less. This process requires us to walk higher up but come down for the night. As a part of this process, we first visit the Sagarmatha National Park Museum, where those of us interested get to know about the landscape, wildlife and people for whom the Everest Region is a home. After this visit, we go further up to Everest View Hotel. This is a location that offers a spectacular view of the Himalayas in its proximity including Mt Everest, Mt Lhotse, and the awesome Mt Ama Dablam. The Khumjung Valley, along with its famous Monastery, is yet another sight most find intriguing. After we return, a walk around the bazaar keeps many travelers engaged in one or the other acts of personal interest.

          • Day 5 Namche to Dole (4,040 mt.). Walking 4 hours. Overnight at guest house.

Our stop for lunch today is Phunki Tenga, a small settlement, around three hours away. With pines and rhododendrons thick in the area and the raging Dudhkoshi somewhere close, a lunch in Phunki Tenga is something of an experience. Two hours from here on and we reach Dole, a village with around a dozen or so constructions. This is where we stop for the night.

            • Day 6 Dole to Machhermo (4,470 mt.). Walking 4-5 hours. Overnight at guest house.

Our entire trek today is on a route that is a mix of gentle ups and downs. The first two and a half hours’ of the walk brings us to Luza, with a single teahouse. We stop for tea. The next two and a half hours’ walk from here on takes us to Machharmo. This is where we stop for lunch as well as the night.

              • Day 7 Machhermo to Gokyo (4,790 mt.). Walking 5 hours. Overnight at guest house.

On this part of the trek, going up the terminal moraine of Ngozumpa Glacier demands a little extra from all traversing. Consisting of six lakes altogether, the Gokyo Lakes is the highest freshwater lake systems. After we pass the second of the three lakes on this trail, the path steadies a little. The third lake is known locally as Dudh Pokhari. Gokyo Village is situated very close to this lake and this is where we stop for the night.

                • Day 8 Gokyo to Gokyo Ri (5,360 mt.) and retreat to Machhermo. Walking 7-8 hours. Overnight at guest house.

Early morning is the time for our walk today since sunrise from Gokyo Ri on a clear day is not something to miss out on. After a demanding almost six-hundred-meter climb, we arrive at the vantage point: massive elevations in more than a couple of dozens with four of them above 8000 meters – Mt Everest, Mt Choyu, Mt Lhotse and Mt Makalu. A walk back to Gokyo Village for lunch and we head for Machharmo, where we stop not just for lunch but also for the night.

                  • Day 9 Machhermo to Namche (3,440 mt.). Walking 5-6 hours. Overnight at guest house.

Our return today starts out with a four-hour walk to Mong-la for lunch. From here on, the trail is a six-hundred-meter, on the shaper side, for around half an hour or so and eases off from then on. Namché is now only about two hours away.

                    • Day 10 Namche to Lukla. Walking 7 hours. Overnight at guest house.

Retracing our footsteps, we arrive in Phakding Village and stop for lunch. The next four hours or so should take us to Lukla. This is where we six-hundred-meter for the night.

                      • Day 11 Early morning fly back to Kathmandu. Overnight at hotel.

Weather willing, the flight back to Kathmandu should bring most of us for lunch on time. With the day still young, many people choose to spend the afternoon walking around Thamel.

                        • Day 12 Transfer to Airport for your final departure from Nepal.

Depending largely on your travel fixture, you will be leaving for Tribhuvan International Airport for your departure from Nepal either in the morning or six-hundred-meters afternoon or in the evening.
