Mera Peak Climbing Itinerary
Day 1 Arrival at Kathmandu Airport and transfer to hotel. Overnight at hotel.
Day 2 Fly to Lukla (2,804 mt.) & trek to Chuthunga (3,440 mt.). Walking 4 hours. Overnight at guest house.
This early-morning flight to Lukla lasts for around half an hour. The views outside the window sufficiently capture the attention of all on board – cameras, mobiles, photographs. Our walk to Chutanga starts after breakfast in Lukla. We start out by choosing to traverse the route that goes right, not the one that goes straight ahead towards Phakding. Mostly on levelled ground, the trail requires that we walk for around four hours. The dense forest around is bound to make the travel a refreshing one. In one of the several accommodation options in Chutanga, we stop for the night in a village nestled in a forest.
Day 3 Chutangato to Thuli Kharka (3,900 mt.) via Zwatra-La Pass (4,610 mt.). Walking 6 hours. Overnight at guest house.
Today, we start out with a view to crossing Zwatra-La Pass. We therefore head off in this direction, up a gruesome ascent that should last for somewhere between three and half to four and half hours, depending largely on two major factors: the condition of our own body and the weather. From atop the Pass at 4,610 metres, the view on offer of Lingding Himal easily captures the attention of all opting for this trip. Thuli Kharka is another two hours or so from here on. It is in the settlement we stop for the night.
Day 4 Thuli Kharka to Kothe (3,600 mt.). Walking 5 hours. Overnight at guest house.
Our walk today starts out on a steady descent from ridge to ridge and arrives in Thulodunga, where we choose to stop for lunch. Lunch over and we move on. Down a sharp descent that requires us to show some respect, we walk all the way to Hinku River. The trail then turns an uphill. Kothe, the settlement we have planned to stay in for the night, is located on the riverside. Equipped to our comfort zone, it is this village we stop for the night.
Day 5 Kothe to Thaknak (4,350 mt.). Walking 5 hours .Overnight at guest house.
Our destination today is Thaknak some five hours away. We therefore head off to this direction. Up a steady uphill and we still feel the exhaustion; the altitude after all is demanding. Even the plant life give in as the vegetation thins out and only a handful of those adamant species cling on. Once we pass a monastery, Thaknak is not very far. In one of the several accommodation facilities in this settlement, we check-in for the night. The amenities here should be rated as good in comparison to many other places.
Day 6 Thaknak to Khare (5,045 mt.). Walking 5 hours.Overnight at guest house.
Today, we start out after breakfast on our way to Kharé. This walk up a steady ascent takes most to Kharé in about four hours or so. Located on open expanse, Kharé has some accommodation arrangements for those traversing through its land. This is where we stop for the night. That our gears need to be good condition is not something that requires any exaggeration. It is here we therefore ascertain that our climbing equipment are ready for the climb.
Day 7 Rest day for acclimatization at Khare. Overnight at guest house.
We head for the High Camp after a decent breakfast. The snowline requires that put our crampons on. The only direction we walk from here on is up. Passing the Mera-la Pass on the way, we forge ahead and come to the High Camp towards the end of this five-hour climb. It’s time for us to set up those tents since this is where we stop for the night before our final ascent.
Day 8 Khare to High Camp (5,780 mt.). Walking 5-6 hours. Overnight at tent camp.
We start out early today, at around one or so in the morning. Inspection of the equipment once again and after a quick breakfast, we put on all the gear necessary. With the final stretch of around hundred metres or so requiring us to use the ropes, we finally stand on the summit of Mera Peak. Once on the summit of Mera and it’s a time for a celebration for many, our actions highlighting the emotions – smiling, taking photographs and hugging one another. We may not be able to stay for long on top, however, owing much to the unpredictable weather conditions. We therefore climb down to the High Camp and continue since our stopover for the night is Kharé. Retracing our footsteps back to Kharé after a successful summiting is an experience only those who have made to top would be in a position to aptly feel.Kharé is where we stop for the night.
Day 9 Highcamp to the Mera Peak Summit (6,461 mt.) and back to Khare . Walking 9-10 hours. Overnight at guest house.

Our return journey starts after breakfast. Stopping for lunch in Chutanga, we head straight for Lukla. This is where we stop for the night.
Day 13 Early morning fly back to Kathmandu. Overnight at hotel.
Weather willing, the flight back to Kathmandu should bring most of us for lunch on time. With the day still young, many people choose to spend the afternoon walking around Thamel.
Day 14 Leisure day in Kathmandu (Sightseeing optional). Overnight at hotel.
This is totally a free day in Kathmandu for relaxation after a long journey. On the other hand we can say its a reserve day, in case of bad weather if the flight from Lukla to Kathmandu is cancelled on the earlier day. Sightseeing trip in UNESCOs' World Heritage sites and shopping are the other options of the day.
Day 15 Transfer to Airport for your final departure from Nepal.
Depending largely on your travel fixture, you will be leaving for Tribhuwan International Airport for your departure from Nepal either in the morning or in the afternoon or in the evening.
