About Kathmandu Valley Trek
The Kathmandu Valley Trek is an easy and enjoyable way to escape from the hustle and bustle of Nepal’s capital city. The journey provides the opportunity to hike through lush, jungle hills surrounding the valley and to be compensated for your efforts with a spectacular panorama of the snowy Himalaya.
The Kathmandu Valley Trek is ideal for travelers with extra days in Kathmandu and more permanent residents or anyone in search of an opportunity for a quick adventure. The route is short and moderate, and amazingly, visitors can get close to the hill culture of Nepal and its beautiful scenery, even with the country’s biggest city nearby.
Join us as we trek in the hills to the north of the valley with the wondrous scenery. Lodging facilities are available along the route, with camping available, too, depending on your preference for a tea-house style trek or camping trek.
The Kathmandu Valley Trek starts with a short drive to the northeast end of the valley. The hiking then begins and the trail goes through Shivapuri National Park and thick forests. We then ascend with views back of the wide Kathmandu valley and eventually we cross a final ridge revealing the mountain scenery to the north. The atmosphere is more peaceful here than the chaotic city life from which we emerged. It is easy to leave one’s concerns behind as the landscape opens up and offers a broad perspective of the surrounding natural beauty.
Actually, the first section out of the valley is the hardest section of the journey before we cross the ridge to the village of Chisapani where we overnight, enjoying marvelous sunset and sunrise views of the Himalaya. The trail onward from Chisapani follows along a ridge, through remote landscape before reaching more traditional villages. Scenic views can be enjoyed all the way to the popular hill station of Nagarkot. Again, we will have sensational sunset and sunrise as the mountains light up in beauty.
We leisurely trail continues to Dhulikhel, a well-known resort town with lush surroundings and Himalayan scenery. We then make our way to Namo Buddha a sacred site for Buddhists and the trail continues on through beautiful landscape to the terraced fields of Balthali where the scenic homes amidst the fields will be unforgettable. Our last stretch is through more fields on an easy trail to the ancient village of Panauti with grand temples along a flowing stream. Panauti is where our hiking ends and we have a short ride back to Kathmandu.
