This adventurous tour visits the upper, west side of the world-famous Annapurna circuit. The ultimate destination of the journey is an ancient pilgrimage site, Muktinath. The high elevation temple of Muktinath is located in an astonishing highland setting and is revered by both Hindus and Buddhists.
Along the way to Muktinath, we pass scenic villages in a remote desert landscape. The trail follows along an ancient trade route with Tibet before branching at Kagbeni. The landscape is spectacular and desolate. We experience traditional lifestyles of high elevation Buddhist culture on the way to unforgettable Muktinath Temple set at the foot of the towering mountains. The surrounding area has many ammonite fossils believed by Hindus to be symbols of Vishnu. Muktinath is sacred for its continuous flame of natural gas, 108 waterspouts, and several shrines. Muktinath translates to “place of liberation.”
We begin the Muktinath Trek with a short and scenic flight from the lakeside city of Pokhara to Jomsom. The plane flies above the deepest gorge on the planet with spectacular views of Annapurna I (8,091 mt , 26,545 ft), tenth highest peak on the planet and first peak over 8,000 m to have ever been summited (reached by a French team in 1950) and Dhaulagiri (8,167 mt , 26,7795 ft), the seventh highest. There will be many more magnificent peaks seen from the air and from the land.
We arrive at the high elevation airport at the headquarters of Mustang District - Jomsom. The desert setting is spectacular and unforgettable. We then follow up the Kali Gandaki River basin to Kagbeni, a long-standing trade gateway and a step back in time. The lifestyle combines age-old customs with some modern amenities. We then follow a remote side valley to the illustrious temple of Muktinath.
We savor the breathtaking surroundings of this otherworldly location. Eventually, we make our way back to Jomsom for a scenic flight back to the tourist destination of Pokhara.
There is a lot to explore in the Annapurna region including sacred caves, hot springs, alpine lakes, and magnificent monasteries.
